Mr. Howard - Assistant Director
Mr. Timothy Howard was born in Manistee, MI, the son of Salvation Army Officers, (pastors) and spent his school age years in various cities in Michigan, Missouri, and Illinois. He graduated from Dearborn Heights Crestwood High School. Having grown up in the Salvation Army church, he was exposed to band music from an early age, starting his musical career on the cornet in the second grade. He received the John Phillip Sousa award at Crestwood HS.
He attended Asbury University, located in Wilmore, KY as an undergraduate earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. He met and married his wife, Julie, during this time. Following his undergraduate studies, he attended the University of Miami, in Coral Gables, FL. He earned his Master of Music Education, and then worked in Miami for another year, teaching music to under-privileged youth who attended the Salvation Army. Mr. Howard started his school teaching career in Indianapolis, IN. He taught at the Lutheran High School and several of their K-8 schools for two years. Wanting to come back to Michigan, he was hired at New Lothrop Area Schools where he taught for 30 years. Mr. Howard’s bands have received outstanding ratings over the years and have been invited to play the National Anthem at various events, including the Lansing Lugnuts and the Great Lake Loons baseball games.
Mr. Howard and his wife both retired from teaching in the spring of 2018 and are enjoying their “free” time. Mr. Howard enjoys running, reading, and composing music. He hopes to become a published composer in the near future. They have two grown children, Courtney and her husband David Schwarm, who live in Malibu, CA and Jonathon, who is graduate student in Mechanical Engineering at MSU in East Lansing. Because of his love for students and band, Mr. Howard was both interested and excited about the opportunity to work part-time with the Chesaning HS Band and feels extremely blessed he was hired.
