Oboe
The oboe is a true woodwind…with something extra! It has two reeds, instead of one. This is called a double reed. It looks very similar to a clarinet, but has a singular tube and reed, rather than a mouthpiece. Oboes have very high voices that soar over and through the sounds of other instruments.
Due to the complexity of this instrument, students interested in oboe should take private lessons or always attend morning band for extra help. It is also important that students learn how to make reeds in private lessons. Students should learn how to make reeds after one year of playing this instrument. Reed making classes are offered once at select Michigan University's and at week long summer workshops to learn the craft. This instrument is much easier to play once a student learns to make reeds. It also saves a lot of money.
